Eric went here on a cloudy day. Pete & Rupert chanced upon some excellent weather. First up was a 2 hour journey to Garmisch-Partenkirchen then onto the mountain railway to go up Zugspitz - Germany's highest mountain.
Setting out from Garmisch-Partenkirchen to Zugspitz |
Alpspitz & Zugspitz |
A bit of cloud at the top |
Change from one train to one with cogs |

This will take us from 750m to 2600m... |
...which is here |
Still a bit of snow around... |
but skiing season definitely over |
The cable car to the top emerges from the cloud |

Looking towards Austria... |
Valluga (top of St.Anton) is there somewhere |

The glacier is pretty small |

This part is in Austria. |

Still in Austria |
Back in Germany we ignore the warning signs... |
... and set off for the top |
waiting to do the final few metres |
and a bit of cloud comes & joins us at the top |
here we are at 2962m |

Back in the safe zone... |
yes, it was a bit dodgy at the top |
To the beer terrace... |
To the beer terrace... |
...for some well earned beers |
and some entertainment |
After gulaschsuppe a bit of apfelstrudel |
the birds line up for their share |
they get fat on chips |
Back down the mountain by cable car... |
...straight down to Eibsee |

where the train enters the mountain |

Eibsee |
The lake bank was probably closer to the tree once... |
a scramble back up from the lake |
looking from the lake back up at Zugspitz |
the train will take us from Eibsee back to Garmish-Partenkirchen |

The valley approching Garmish-Partenkirchen |

2 hours later we find the others relaxing outside our hotel... |
...it's a tough life |
